The Omlet Insulated Chicken Waterer: How to keep the water cool in extreme heat

Follow these tips and your chickens will have access to cool water all day long, helping them stay hydrated and healthy even in extreme heat.

1. Refill the Waterer daily with cold water:

Top up the Insulated Waterer with cold water everyday, around 41°F (or 5°C) is ideal. Chickens prefer water between 41°F (or 5°C) and 68°F (or 20°C). By starting at the lowest temperature, it helps keep the water within this range for longer.

2. Keep the Waterer as full as you can:

A full Waterer stays cooler for longer compared to one that’s half empty. More water = more thermal mass, which slows down the heating effect of the sun.

3. Use the nipple attachments in hotter temperatures:

In hot weather, we recommend using the nipples rather than the cups, as water sitting in the cups can warm up very quickly in high temperatures. The nipples on the other hand, only let water out when a chicken drinks from them, so the water they’re getting is fresh and cool, coming straight from inside the Insulated Waterer.

If your chickens do not already know how to use the nipples, we recommend training them to use them before the weather becomes too warm, so you’re confident they’ll have access to cool water whenever they need it.

4. Keep the Waterer out of direct sun:

Place the Waterer in a shady spot out of direct sunlight. This will help keep the water inside cooler for longer.

5. Add ice to the water inside the Waterer:

The insulation will keep water cool and thirst quenching, but adding ice will keep water cooler for even longer, especially on extremely hot days.
